Evangelist John R. Rice (1895-1980) started the Sword Of The Lord in 1934 as a newspaper for Christians to expose modernism, worldliness, apostasy and false teachers; as well as to educate believers in the Word of God and advertise helpful resources. Pastor Curtis Hutson succeeded Dr. Rice in 1980 and faithfully took up the mantle until he graduated to Heaven in 1995. After that, Dr. Shelton Smith took the mantle but in recent years has dropped the ball for God, running the Sword Of The Lord into the ground spiritually. Modernism came about by an ungodly society in America who wanted to separate faith from the absolutes of truth. Modernism includes the apostate neo-evangelical movement, bogus theories of evolution, Marxist socialism, communism, secular psychology, existentialism (i.e., the “do your own thing” mentality), spirituality without theology, et cetera. We are in trouble folks. Our churches are a mess today spiritually.
The Devil's lies of wrong repentance and Lordship Salvation (both excellent articles by Dr. Jack Hyles) have crept into at least 90% of churches today. Saddest of all is that the majority of professed Christians (including independent fundamental Baptists) couldn't care less about contending for the faith anymore. Dr. John R. Rice had a fire in his soul to fight the good fight of faith, and he did. But the Sword Of The Lord today no longer fights against the deadly heresies which are destroying churches today. If someone would have lied to me when I was 13 years old, and told me that to get to Heaven I had to turn from “THE ACT” of sinning, I never would have come to Jesus Christ to be saved, because I would have felt that I couldn't make such a commitment to do the impossible.
