“But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies...” —2nd Peter 2:1
Indeed, Luther and the other reformers did challenge the Catholic Church that sold indulgences and offered a “works-based” type of salvation. However, just because Martin Luther protested against the Catholic Church doesn't mean that he was saved. Martin Luther often taught that salvation was based on faith alone, and not received based upon a person’s meritorious works; however, Luther’s idea of faith alone does not conform to the biblical teaching that baptism is not required for salvation. Luther errantly taught that faith without works (specifically water baptism) is invalid. This is NOT biblical faith! Biblical faith is simply RESTING in Jesus because of His finished work on the cross of Calvary.
In his Large Catechism, Luther wrote:
I am horrified by how wicked and willfully ignorant most Baptists are. There is no profession as shameful and contemptible today than that of being a Baptist pastor. The stench of their haughty arrogance and willful ignorance sickens me. I became a born again Baptist at age 13 in 1980, and I also am a Baptist preacher, so I am fully qualified to criticize my own denomination.
Here is a perfect example of why I called them “Contemptible Baptists.” The Alabama Baptist publication sinfully titles their article: “Hero of the Faith—Martin Luther.” The $64,000 question is then: “Was Martin Luther a hero of the faith?” No, he was an unsaved infidel all his life and a lying deceiver, which I will prove to you. Martin Luther (1483-1546) is burning in Hell forever, because he put his trust into a counterfeit plan of salvation. Adding water baptism to one's faith is a failure to trust Jesus Christ alone.
John 6:40, “And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” The ONLY way to get to Heaven is to REST in Christ's sacrifice on the cross as full payment for your sins, believing that He was buried but then physically resurrected from the dead after three days. This is the Gospel (1st Corinthians 15:1-4). Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Whosoever BELIEVES THE GOSPEL (i.e., the GOOD NEWS) of Jesus crucified, buried and risen is saved.
Kindly said, our fundamental Bible colleges and Baptist churches today are filled with woefully and willfully ignorant believers, who view Martin Luther as a great hero of the faith. Tragically, Martin Luther was a heretic! I realize this comes as a shock to many Christians, but the proof is undeniable. The biblical teaching of being saved by faith alone is often attributed to Martin Luther, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Mr. Luther also taught the damnable false doctrine of Infant Baptism. My long time ministry friend, Pastor Max D. Younce (1935-2023), wrote a helpful book titled, "MARTIN LUTHER: MASTER OF DECEIT." This book does an excellent job exposing Mr. Luther as a fraud. When I personally handed a hardcopy of this book to Marty Herron (senior pastor at the Harvest Baptist Church on Guam in 2014), he cowardly had his associate pastor Joe Hensen scold me the next time I came back to church. I was disgusted at the cowardice of Marty Herron (who since 2018 has been the incompetent vice president of Faith Baptist Bible College and Theological Seminary in Ankeny, Iowa). Mr. Herron is a Lordship Salvation trusting hellbound infidel, who is an enemy of the cross of Jesus Christ. Hell is coming up to meet Marty at his coming at the end of this life (Isaiah 14:9).

In his Large Catechism, Luther wrote:
[I] affirm that Baptism is no human trifle, but that it was established by God Himself. Moreover, He earnestly and solemnly commanded that we must be baptized or we shall not be saved. No one is to think that it is an optional matter like putting on a red coat. It is of greatest importance that we hold Baptism in high esteem as something splendid and glorious. The reason why we are striving and battling so strenuously for this view of Baptism is that the world nowadays is full of sects that loudly proclaim that Baptism is merely an external form and that external forms are useless.... Although Baptism is indeed performed by human hands, yet it is truly God’s own action (1978, pp. 98-99). [emphasis added]
SOURCE: Luther, Martin (1978), Luther’s Large Catechism (Saint Louis, MO: Concordia)Where does the holy Bible “solemnly command that we must be baptized or we shall not be saved”? From Luther’s own comments, it is clear that he required water baptism for salvation. This is called the heresy of Baptismal Regeneration. Many Protestant denominations today have been infected with Luther's damnable heresy. Sadly, most fundamental Bible-believing churches have also been caught up in the woeful Martin Luther deception.
Luther wrote his catechisms in the year 1529, which was 12 years after he alleged became saved in 1517. A truly born again child of God fully understands that salvation comes solely through faith alone without works. Faith is the only righteous thing that I can do! For Mr. Luther to teach that water baptism was not optional to get to Heaven, speaks volumes as to his status as a true Christian. Beware of the foolish teaching in many churches today that you can be wrong on the Gospel and still be saved. Galatians 1:8, “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” The Gospel which the Apostle Paul preached is defined in 1st Corinthians 15:1-4 as Jesus' death on the cross, burial and His bodily resurrection three days later. Adding water baptism is not part of the true Gospel; it is fraud, another gospel.
Martin Luther was subtle, just as Satan is clever and subtle—teaching that salvation is by faith alone, while simultaneously requiring water baptism to be saved. Obviously, Luther didn't consider baptism a self-righteous work. The inspired Word of God states in John 3:18, “He that believeth on him is not condemned...” I don't see any mention of “baptism” there. John the apostle professed in 1st John 5:13 the purpose of his Epistle... “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life.” Carefully notice that John never mentions baptism in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd John.
Romans 11:6 plainly tells us that if something is by works then it is no longer by grace, “And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.” If you add anything to simple childlike faith in Jesus, then you have corrupted the saving grace of God and the Gospel. Such is the way of the Devil. Martin Luther taught a perverted gospel.
Every hellbound Catholic today who speaks of faith, also believes that salvation comes only through keeping the Seven Sacraments of the Church in Rome. Of course, that is a false view of the Gospel and a road straight to Hell, fire and damnation. Likewise, for Martin Luther to demand water baptism for salvation is damnable heresy. How in the world could any respectable Baptist call Mr. Luther, a “Hero of the faith?” Luther was a theological fraud!
There is no argument that Martin Luther was a great man historically, and that he was instrumental in translating the Bible. However, it is clear to any honest observer that Mr. Luther preached another gospel of partial faith in Christ plus works. Any Baptist (whether it be a college professor, clergy or church layman) who praises Martin Luther as a hero of the faith, after the truth I have shown you, is a darn FOOL. Luther was NOT a born again Christian!
