The Wrath Of God

Romans 5:8-9, ”But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be SAVED FROM WRATH through him.”

The Bible teaches that God's WRATH abideth upon all Christ-rejecters. 2nd Thessalonians 1:8-9 warns us, “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.”

How much clearer could the Bible be concerning God's wrath upon the unsaved. Most people today have been taught misconceptions about God. Although God unconditionally loves all humanity, He is also angry with those who have refused to obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ. John 3:36, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” God is angry with anyone who has said, “No,” to receiving Jesus as their personal Savior.

God is angry with the followers of Islam, a false religion which denies that Jesus is the Christ. God is angry with the followers of Judaism, a false religion which denies that Jesus is the Christ. The Word of God calls them all liars and antichrists. 1st John 2:22, “Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.” God is very angry with those sinners who refuse His offer of salvation through the redemptive work of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, Who paid our sin debt. God's offer to pardon man's iniquity on the basis of Christ's shed blood is a token of God's goodness, love and mercy. To reject such an offer, when we deserve to plunge immediately into the fires of Hell for our sins, is to spit on God's grace and tempt the hand of God.

Romans 2:5-6, “But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds.” The only escape from the holy wrath of God on Judgment Day (i.e., The Day of Wrath) is the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Romans 5:8-9, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.” Thank God the Father for the gift of His dear Son, Jesus Christ, Who paid our sin debt.

Matthew 5:45, “That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.” If God didn't unconditionally love wicked sinners, the ground would immediately open and swallow them all into Hell beneath. The Bible teaches that evil and unjust men enjoy the same blessings of the sun and rain as do the righteous. Oh, don't be fooled by your blessings in life friend, if you have not obeyed the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the wrath of a holy and vengeful God rests upon your head. You are a marked man, or woman. Your Stay Of Execution will eventually expire, you will perish in your sins, and you will suffer the wrath of God's fiery vengeance in the Lake of Fire. Revelation 20:14-15, “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” Is your name written in the Lamb's Book of Life?

It is tragic that so many preachers and Christians today idolize Jonathan Edwards powerful sermon, SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF ANGRY GOD. Please don't misunderstand me, it is a GREAT sermon, and one which every person in the world needs to hear today; but why do we have to go back to the 18th century to find a benchmark of Hell, fire and damnation sermons? Every preacher, pastor, televangelist and Bible teacher in America ought to be preaching the same message as Jonathan Edwards. Please read this brief excerpt from Jonathan Edwards' famous sermon, SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF AN ANGRY GOD...
“The God that holds you over the pit of Hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked: His wrath towards you burns like fire; He looks upon you as worthy of nothing else, but to be cast into the fire; He is of purer eyes than to bear to have you in his sight; you are ten thousand times more abominable in His eyes, than the most hateful venomous serpent is in ours. You have offended Him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince; and yet it is nothing but His hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment.

It is to be ascribed to nothing else, that you did not go to Hell the last night; that you was suffered to awake again in this world, after you closed your eyes to sleep. And there is no other reason to be given, why you have not dropped into Hell since you arose in the morning, but that God's hand has held you up. There is no other reason to be given why you have not gone to Hell, since you have sat here in the house of God, provoking His pure eyes by your sinful wicked manner of attending His solemn worship. Yea, there is nothing else that is to be given as a reason why you do not this very moment drop down into Hell.”

Can you imagine Joel Osteen saying that to his congregation? Instead of 70,000 people attending his church every Sunday in Houston, Texas, he'd be preaching to empty seats! Can you imagine Pat Robertson saying something like that on TV?

Oh, if only preachers would once again warn sinners of the vengeful wrath of God and the frightening judgment to come. 2nd Corinthians 5:11, “Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.” If we as believers don't warn the unsaved of the judgment to come, then who will?

Here is an excellent quote from the mighty man of God, Dr. Lee Roberson (1909-2007), concerning eternal punishment:
“Somebody says, 'The thought of Hell is so horrible.' Well, my friend, so is cancer, so is tuberculosis, so is the grave. Someone said, 'I believe sin ought to be punished, but not for eternity.' That's your view, not God's.

Again another says, 'I don't believe in the wrath of God.' Then you don't believe your Bible. The Bible says the wrath of God abideth on the one who doesn't believe in Jesus Christ. He is lost forever.

Now, these things come to us out of the Word of God. The teaching of eternal punishment should give us a hatred for sin. We ought to hate sin. The reason we have changed so much in this day in all of our churches is that we are not hearing much on this subject. Therefore, we endorse sin. We engage in sin. We camouflage the sin in our lives and allow things to go by, instead of hating sin as God wants us to hate sin . . .

The teaching of eternal punishment should give us a passion for the souls of men.”

Thank God for those few preachers today who do still faithfully preach the word. Thank God for those faithful preachers over the past century, Evangelist Billy Sunday (1862-1935), Pastor Dwight L. Moody (1837-1899), Pastor Harry Ironside (1876-1951), Dr. R.G. Lee (1886-1978), Dr. John R. Rice (1895-1980), Dr. Curtis Hutson (1934-1995), Dr. Jack Hyles (1926-2001) and other mighty men of God over the past century who have carried the mantle of God's Word.

The Biblical doctrine and reality of God's wrath has been abandoned in America's pulpits. Psalm 7:11, “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.”
