Romans 4:1-5, “What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.”
I love that well-known passage of Scripture. To no surprise, Evangelist Ray Comfort ignores this passage of Scripture entirely in his popular, “The Evidence Bible.” If I wrote a Bible commentary, this would be one of the most important passage to address, because it plainly teaches that salvation is by faith alone, without turning from sins, surrendering one's life to Christ, making Jesus “Lord,” or anything else that God doesn't require to be saved. Proponents of the Lordship Salvation heresy don't like this Bible passage, because it plainly refutes them! The Bible says a man's “FAITH IS COUNTED FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS”!!!
Bless God, the day I got saved as a 13 year old boy, my account in Heaven was forever settled! By faith I became a blood-washed, redeemed, child of God (Galatians 3:26). My sins (past, present and future) were all washed away by Jesus' precious blood (1st John 1:7). The old account was settled long ago!!! I am saved. It is a done deal. Nothing else is required of me to get to Heaven, because it was a free gift from God (Romans 6:23). I simply took it by childlike faith in Jesus Christ.
We are secure in God's salvation, because we are secure in Christ's work, not our work! 1st John 5:4, “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” Faith in Jesus Christ is the way to have eternal life! John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” We are safe and secure in the Father's hands. I hunger for wayward preachers to repent of their false teachings! I wish Evangelist Ray Comfort would come to his senses and stop preaching another gospel. I wish Dr. Steve Pettit (president of Bob Jones University) would come to his senses, and stop preaching another gospel. Here is a wonderful truthful quote by famous Christian author John Bunyan (1628-1688):
“If you do not put a difference between justification wrought by the man Christ without and sanctification wrought by the Spirit of Christ within… you are not able to divide the Word aright, but contrariwise, you corrupt the Word of God, and cast stumbling blocks before the people.” —Evangelist John BunyanThat is the exact opposite of What Evangelist Steve Pettit heretically teaches at Bob Jones University today to their 2,700 students and faculty. Dr. Pettit heretical teaches:
“You can't just speak about getting saved, and you accepted Christ, and then that's it! There is a justification; There is a sanctification; There's ultimately a glorification, and though there are three parts, they are all part of the whole, and you cannot separate them. In order for you to qualify for the award, you have to get into the race, you have to stay in the race, and you have to finish the race. If you want to win, you have to run to the end; and winning in the Christian life is everything, because if you lose—if you don't finish—you lose everything—you lose your SOUL. And so, the Christian race is the life of faith that begins, is run, and is finished when we cross over into Heaven!” [emphasis added] —Dr. Steve Pettit (“What Does It Mean To Run 'The Race'?” - 11:34)I want to repeat what John Bunyan said, because it is exactly what is wrong with Dr. Pettit's counterfeit gospel message:
“If you do not put a difference between justification wrought by the man Christ without and sanctification wrought by the Spirit of Christ within… you are not able to divide the Word aright, but contrariwise, you corrupt the Word of God, and cast stumbling blocks before the people.” —Evangelist John BunyanWhat a helpful quote! John Bunyan nailed it, explaining where John MacArthur and Steve Pettit go horribly wrong on the Gospel. These ungodly men make light of the truth of the Gospel, merging Free Grace Theology with Lordship Salvation, and in so doing they are not able to divide the Word of God aright!!! Instead, they CORRUPT the Word of God, and cast a stumbling block before the people. This is exactly what Dr. Bob Jones Sr. (1883-1968) warned would happen, and for which he'd blow Bob Jones College to smithereens if he could! The Devil and his unsaved infidels have taken control of Bob Jones University today!!! You don't have to surrender everything, nor turn from your sins, nor run the race faithfully until the end, to receive God's free gift of eternal life! JESUS PAID IT ALL!!!
My mentor of the Christian faith, Pastor Jack Hyles (1926-2001) preached a beautiful sermon on this very topic, titled: “Steps In Sanctification; Or, The Root Of All Heresy.” I encourage you to listen to the message, it will greatly help you understand what is wrong with the Lordship Salvation crowd. Every Bob Jones University faculty member and student needs to hear this positional sermon! But Dr. Hyles was just a man, and our only authority is the Holy Bible. What saith the Scripture? Romans 4:6-8, “Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.” Oh don't miss that dear reader! BLESSED IS THE MAN TO WHOM THE LORD WILL NOT IMPUTE SIN! THAT IS ETERNAL SECURITY!!!
God doesn't give temporary life or probationary life, the only type of life He gives is ETERNAL LIFE. In acts 2:41 the Bible says 3,000 souls were saved. They simply gladly received the Gospel truth that the Apostle Peter preached, and they were saved by faith. The Bible doesn't say that there was a waiting and watching period, to see if they stuck. No, they simply believed and the Bible says they were saved. Beware of any false teacher who says that we don't really know if somebody is saved until you watch their life, monitoring their spiritual progress to see if they've changed. Such nonsense is popular in many churches today, because of false teachers; such as, Evangelist Ray Comfort and Pastor Paul Washer, but it is totally unbiblical.
The Bible says we are saved BY FAITH, and the life we live has absolutely nothing to do with proving that our faith is genuine. If a man marries a woman, but then is unfaithful to her, committing adultery with other women, their marriage is still 100% legal. Obviously, that man does not love his wife as he ought, and is a horrible sinner, but that has nothing to do with the legality of their marriage. Likewise, when you get saved, a legal transaction has taken place. You have been judicially declared JUSTIFIED by God, just-if-you'd never sinned at all. Your sins have been pardoned POSITIONALLY in Christ. However, CONDITIONALLY you are not right with God, and that is a different matter of God disciplining His children (Hebrews 12:6-8). So you see, being a child of God is our POSITION in Christ, but the life we choose to live day by day determines our CONDITION in Christ. Here is a helpful sermon by Pastor Jack Hyles called: 'HOW TO BE RIGHT WITH GOD.' In this audio sermon, Dr. Hyles explains the difference between being right with God POSITIONALLY versus CONDITIONALLY. Understanding this basic Bible truth will help you grow as a Christian, and avoid many pitfalls of heresy along the way.
The moment you got saved (born-again), God declared you JUSTIFIED, Just-If-I'd never sinned! The old account was settled long ago! HALLELUJAH! You were sealed (indwelt) with the blessed Holy Spirit the very second you received Jesus as your Savior. Your name was forever preserved in the Lamb's Book of Life in Heaven. You were, and are, now a member of God's heavenly family permanently. Jesus promised in John 6:37 never to cast anyone away, not for any reason, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” You have the Lord's PROMISE!
What saith the Scripture? John 16:33, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Jesus overcame the world by His sinless life, sacrificial death on the cross to pay for our sins, and His victorious bodily resurrection from the dead. Hallelujah! God is more than amazing!!! Praise God, the old account was settled long ago—not by what I did—but by what Jesus did 2,000 years ago on Calvary's cross to save me from my sins, through the precious blood that He shed on the cross and sprinkled on the Mercy Seat in Heaven (Hebrews 9:12, 22-24; 12:24). THANK YOU JESUS!!!
