Exodus 20:14, “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
The old adage is true: Be careful where you sow your wild oats or you may one day pray for crop failure. In our wicked American culture today, I have heard of numerous immoral situations where husbands and wives have an “open relationship.” Long time KISS rock band frontman and bassist Gene Simmons (real Jewish name: Chaim Witz) has publicly bragged of his philandering. Gene Simmons finally married his girlfriend Shannon Tweed on October 1, 2011, after dating her for 29 years. During those 29 years Gene Simmons publicly claimed to have slept with over 5,000 women, confirming the rumors surrounding his ungodly sexual exploits. Tragically, perverse American society today sees no problem with such a wicked lifestyle of fornication. What saith the Scripture? Hebrews 13:4, “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”
Dear reader, in any marriage, if a wife approves of her husband having a girlfriend that doesn't exempt him from God's commandment “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” If your wife gave you permission to have sex with another women, you didn't cheat on her, but you did cheat on God! The LORD never gives any married man permission to commit adultery. David was king over all of Israel, yet God punished him for committing adultery with Uriah's wife, Bathsheba.
A common excuse that adulterous married men make is that “I am oversexed.” No, Pastor Jack Hyles (1926-2001) was right, “You are under charactered!” No man or woman ever has God's permission to commit sexual immorality, regardless of your physical or emotional needs. People will come up with all kinds of crazy ideas to justify their wickedness.
Adultery is a horrible sin that must be shunned and avoided by implementing common sense rules for married couples. It is this humble Bible preacher's opinion that at no time should any married man or woman be alone with the opposite gender. You're just making a provision for the flesh if you do. Adultery often starts with seemingly innocent interactions, such as flirting or casual conversations, which can lead to deeper emotional connections. It's important to recognize that these initial actions can set the stage for more serious breaches of trust in a relationship. This is why I am 100% against younger wives working in the workplace. The Bible teaches that young Christian women belong at home; so if you don't like that, get mad at God because He said it (1st Timothy 5:14-15).
Marriages are destroyed from within, not without. All you need to fall in love is a pulse; but to stay married you need a plan. Earnest Hemingway was absolutely right, “All things truly wicked start from innocence.” If you are married and desire to please God by being faithful, then you need to declare war on flirtation, lust, neighing after your neighbor's spouse and other seemingly lesser sins that often lead to ruin. God deserves better from all of us.
